Text with meaning

strong, em, code, quotes and more.

Words that matter more

Some words need importance, some need *stress*, some are code or quotes. HTML has elements for each, so browsers and assistive technology can convey the meaning — not just the look.

Inline elements

  • <strong> — important. <em> — stressed emphasis.
  • <code> — code, <kbd> — keys to press.
  • <blockquote> — a quoted passage; <q> for short inline quotes.
  • <abbr title> — an abbreviation with its full form.
  • Avoid <b> and <i> when you mean importance or emphasis.

These are inline elements: they sit inside a line of text. Headings and paragraphs are block elements: each starts on a new line.
